GalCiv2 does not like to be Alt-Tabbed back and forth from.

It is usually better to save the game and exit if you want to do something else.

I didn't alt tab, I was playing and it *crashed*, iow, while I was playing, it crashed and then showed the IE error box. It just happned again just now and this time I copied the info in the little error reporting box that MS wants you to send in the error to them. It said:

(in the above there weren't any actual x's I replaced my RL name with the X's)

I also hit the debug and it came up with:

this CXX0017: Error: symbol "this" not found

But that does not sound like an Internet Explorer error box. It sounds more the the Windows Explorer error dialog.

IE crashed and came up on the "do you want to send in an error report" box then I hit the debug to get the extended errors. Of course it sounds like a windows error box seeing how tightly IE is melded into windows.

Then don't have Internet Explorer running while playing the game.

Personally, I don't have a problem when I leave IE7 open and minimized while playing the game. But if you do, do the sensible thing and simply close it.


And from what you have shown so far, it was GalCiv2 that crashed - not Internet Explorer.


Are you sure you actually understand what you are seeing?


It would be a good idea to post the contents of your Debug.err file in a reply - just after a crash. That would give the devs something to work with.
It is located in the main program folder, usually C:\Program Files\Stardock\TotalGaming\GalCiv2.

Please install 'SmartException' from the free stuff section in Stardock Central. Make sure that SE is running and start your game as normal. If the game crashes it will generate an exception report that can be emailed to gc2bugs@stardock.com.

Include with the email a description of what you were doing at the time, how to reproduce the crash if possible, and a zipped save if applicable when you send an SE log to gc2bugs. The devs cannot help if you do not provide these details!

If SE does not automatically pop up and prompt you to send the report when the game crashes, you can find it at C:\Program Files\Stardock\SmartException (it will be the newest file with a .CRA extension).

I don't think you are hearing what I am saying:) I was *not* running IE in the background. In fact the only thing running was DL; but when it crashed out the IE send error report poped up. I thing GC2 when you are using the metaverse must run IE in the background as part of the metaverse. The game must use some sort of ActiveX control as part of the ability to run the metaverse with the game.

I am on my way to look for it righ now, I guess I go to my stardock central to look for it.

It happned again on a new game wich I was about to win. Good thing I did as you suggested; because when it crashed (I was *not* running anything with DL), I did as it said and sent in the zip. I hope it is enough information to fix it. The error says (I have C++ Microsoft Visual Basic installed so when it crashes I am given the option of opening it up in the C++ work enviroment) that the handle "this" is not handled and is an exception. I wonder if it is something simple like one of the coders forgot to put a ";" in the program, which basicley tells the program to ignor the handle "this".
Any way thanks again for teh suggestion; because now I was able to send them a much better bug report and it should help them far more then the other ones I have sent them,

One would think what with IE being used on over 90% of the pc's out there that the developers of GC2 would have tested it using IE, if for no other reason because their game would be more likely to be played on a machine where IE is the default browser.

You would think IE was any good considering that so many people use it. But it isn't, IMO.

I have been using it since it V1, back when Microsoft didn't thing the internet was going to go any where and then when they figured out it was they *bought* mosiac web browser and tacked on the IE name. IMNSHO, IE is no better or worse then any other browser. What makes or breaks a browser is less the coding; because they are all coded just about the same; but rather the user. If a person knows how to set up the security in IE it is as secure as any other browser. It is more a case of how well the wet ware (brain) can configure the software. No software can protect the user from their self, well in acuality it can but then it would have so many restrections on it that the user would not want it.
