Where my software calls home
I am just wondering; because I have not been playing this game long and I am starting to like it; but I keep hearing about "Dark Avatar"; but the one I bought at Walmarts is called "Dread Lords" which was in the new releases; but on here I don't see much about it; but instead everything is about Dark Avatar. The question is "Did I buy an outdated game that wally world was passing off as the newest version?"

Did you buy the Gold Edition?

Dark Avatar is the expansion to Dread Lords. They recently released a "Gold Edition" that came with both of them, so if you got the "Gold Edition", you have both, including the latest version.

GalCiv2 Dread Lords was released in Feb. 2006; the expansion Dark Avatar was released Feb. 2007. The expansion is available as a download from Stardock and as LegacyCWAL pointed out in retail a Gold Edition that bundles both together was released.

The only reason to play Dread Lords is if you want to try the campaign but I found the sandbox games much more fun than the campaign. I you want to learn what happens in the campaign just read the text data files.

If your interested in the backstory read: The Story of the Mithrilar, Arnor, Dread Lords, Humans, Altarians, and Drath

I sure don't know how people are getting such quick victorys I been trying eveything and all I can win is tiny, normal and then only a techological win, which sux big time. I just don't know how the AI is getting such big powerfull ships so quickly; because I sure can't

I bought the Dark Avatar expantion pack also, but and got the CD and the download from here; but now I am thinking that the Orignal Gal Civ2, has more then eitehr Dread Lords or Dark Avatar right? Am I right in thinking that that all I have are to expancion packs and that the orignal game has a lot more then either of these expansion packs? If so what am I mission by not haveing the orignal Gal Civ2?

I don't think that I like DA as muc as DL; because I don't like the spys. I do like the upgraded specs on the enemys fleets and such in 3d; but not the spys, I just don't like them at all; maybe if there was a way to disable them until I get use to the entire game

GalCiv2 Dread Lords was released in Feb. 2006; the expansion Dark Avatar was released Feb. 2007

Is Dread Lords old and Dark Avatar the newest version?

yes, Dread lords is the original. It has only one expansion.

k, but I have DA also it is the first one I got; but I thought there was just a GalCivII but I guess you are saying that DA is the orignal so I guess I have them both, tnx
on Mar 26, 2007
Yeah DA is the original and DL is the expansion.

If you're having problems I recommend either trying on a lower difficulty or reading a guide. Or you could try DL to learn the basic mechanics and then try the expansion, because it really does add alot and I can see where someone new might be overwhelmed.

I did some research to try to help another player, but what I found can be a little surprising. The Altarians can get an overwhelming bonus to economics, research, morale.

If they really tried, they can start the game with the following bonuses:
-Economics 80% (With ferderalist party)
-Research 45%
-Morale 35%

Add in bonuses from researching certain techs as well, and you get:
-Economics 95%
-Research 55%
-Morale 65%

Sorry, double post.

Since I'm editing the double anyhow.

You can see that the Altarians can research quicker, and has the money to support a lot more research centers, and factories than you can. This allows them to research powerful techs quicker, and to afford to support more factories so they can build ships quicker.

I just don't know how the AI is getting such big powerfull ships so quickly; because I sure can't

This is one way they can. The Yor can get a military production, and social production rating of +100% (120% industrialists). The Thalands can get 113% (133% with industrialists), and their super ability allows them to build factories quicker.

Stop and look at the different races that have inherit bonuses (bonuses that the races have without having to spend points) and see what you can get by adding points to further improve the bonues. You might find that the effects can really change your game.

If you have Dark Avatar, then you must also by necessity already have Dread Lords (probably via the Gold Edition, which is both in one box). Dread Lords is the original game.

There is nothing extra in the GC2 product line besides DA, and DL.

I am not having all that much trouble, I have only been playing since the 17th and out of 12 games I have won half of them. I won my first normal, small normal yesterday by a military victory. I think in the beginning I was waiting to long before starting to attack, thinking I would just get wiped out, hense the technological victory. I have found I can get a tec victory just about every time if I want to; but that isn't any fun and is just being hard headed enough to sit through a 15 or 20 year game to get it, lol. I was wondering about the ranks, you know like I got a commander rank with my first victory, is that the norm? Or do they just pick a rank for everyone reguardless of how well they play?

Ranks are based on a combination of the number of games submitted, and your cumulative score, IIRC. I don't know the specific 'level' requirements, though (they've never been posted, so all there is is player speculation).

I submitted all the games on this character before DA was actually released, playing as Korath. Something seemed to have gone wrong with that since they all show on my profile as Drengin games. It's not a big deal to me in either case, so I haven't really looked into it.
